Symptoms of Kidney Disease in Cats
There are quite a few different symptoms of kidney disease in cats to learn
about. It is important to realize that your cat may only have one or two of them
while others exhibit many of them. The severity of these symptoms will also vary
by feline which makes it easy for them to go unnoticed as something important to
evaluate. Talk to your veterinarian about such changes that you notice so that
early intervention can take place if it is needed for your cat.
Many of these symptoms indicate that things are in the beginning stages of
kidney failure:
Changes in coloring around the eyes and a coat that isn’t shiny like before
Consuming more water
Dehydration
Diarrhea
Eating less than before
Lethargy
Posture changes, generally hunching over or moving differently
Urinating more frequently
Vomiting
Weight loss
There are some more advanced symptoms as well that indicate the kidney failure
has reached advanced stages. They will be taken more seriously by your
veterinarian including:
Anemia
Change in the size of the kidneys, they may be smaller than normal or inflamed
Chronic bad breath as this can indicate toxins in the bloodstream
Color changes due to not enough red blood cells being produced
Dehydration
High blood pressure
Soft bones
Swollen abdomen due to fluid retention
Swollen limbs
Ulcers
